The Crosstown Coalition invites Philadelphians to discuss mayoral candidates' answers to questions posed by the Coalition. Questions were generated by citizen responses to a questionnaire sent in Feb, 2007. We encourage you to read candidate answers and comment on what you think. I would like my overarching legacy to be having made Philadelphia the safest big city in America. In order to accomplish this, we will need a more effective law enforcement system, a criminal justice system that is not a revolving door, quality economic and education opportunities, and community as well as parental involvement.
I believe that my experience in making West Oak Lane a thriving community, as Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee for 17 years, and as a consistent leader on issues like crime reduction, school reform and economic development make me ideally suited for this task. I appreciate your interest in my campaign and look forward to working with you to move Philadelphia forward.

My top priority will be expanding educational opportunties to improve the lives of all Philadelphians. Upon leaving office, my Opportunity Agenda, to expand education to lift Philadelphians out of poverty, will be my primary legacy.
I hope to have significantly increased the stock of affordable housing in our city by the time I leave office.
Finally, I hope that my economic development program, which entails a balanced approach of reducing and simplifying taxes, growing small businesses and developing our workforce, will have renewed our city’s economy.

1) Making Philadelphia’s neighborhoods safe again.
2) Revitalizing Philadelphia’s economy by training and educating our workforce and attracting new businesses.
3) Turning the page on the politics of the past by reforming City Hall’s Pay-to-Play culture.

A city in which residents of all neighborhoods are safe to walk the streets without fear of violence and crime; a city in which employment opportunities are abundant and the educational supports need to take advantage of them are available to all; and a city that has shed the self-image and outside reputation of being corrupt and contented.

I would like to leave the city a better place for my grandchildren to live. Violence is at a crisis level, and without serious reduction of violent crime our city’s standing among great American cities will diminish. Without an end to violence, all other efforts will be overshadowed. I would also like to improve the school district, so that it is run in a safe and accountable manner.
Finally, I would like to eliminate the gross receipts portion of the Business Privilege Tax, so that the City’s economy can prosper.
