NUTTER: Greater Use of Civilians in the Police Department

Yes, my administration will publish information on the percentage of police officers who are working “on the street” and those who are working “desk jobs.” I will also direct the Police Commissioner to redeploy police personnel in a way that supports the strategy of increasing the force on the street.

The answers from Congressman Fattah, Evans and responded to the question presented. Congressman Brady replied that he would publish statistics as to the percentage of the force on the street "when reasonable", prompting the question of when it would be unreasonable to tell the public how many police are on patrol. Knox states that he will make "all relevant detail available" and promises police officers "on bike or foot patrol in every community" but does not undertake to tell the citizens how many trained police officers are, for example, stationed at the criminal justice center downtown using their detecting and markmanship skills to track the courtroom appearances of police officers.
