FATTAH: School Reform Commission

I support continuing the city-state partnership, in the form of the School Reform Commission, in governing our schools. I would like to have balanced control of the SRC, with three representatives appointed by the Mayor and three appointed by the Governor. But more importantly, I will work with the Governor to create a fairer state-wide school funding formula that reduces the disparity in per pupil funding between Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs.

I often hear, "it is not about the money" from people who pay to send their children to private schools. It DOES take money to make real educational interventions. That's why the privileged pay to send children to private schools. And that's why I want to pay -- through my tax dollars -- for children in poorer districts to have educational opportunity.

Smaller class sizes, an important predictor for success, cost more money. Teacher coaches and other faculty development, costs money. We need to make it attractive for our best, most experienced, teachers to stay in the neediest schools. A more equitable state wide school funding formula is a real, practical solution. So much of what I hear about education is platitudes -- of course it is important for reducing poverty and violence, invigorating the economy. But how are we going to provide it? Fattah is offering a specific idea here. And a just one.
